Bridget Jones has been one of my favorite heroines since high school. I read the books. And to this date, Bridget Jones Diary is the most watched film in my library. Every Friday and Saturday nights, I put it on in the background and run around like mad getting ready for a date or night with my girls. Bridget is my good-luck charm.
*Spoiler alert*: This post contains spoilers about Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.
So I was so pleased to hear that Bridget is all grown up–with two children to boot! I wasn’t as happy to hear that Mark Darcy, the hero for all the ages, was killed doing something typically heroic. Fielding’s fans threw a fit, of course. Bridget Jones is a rewriting of Austen’s classic, Pride and Prejudice. Killing Mark Darcy is really killing off Mr. Darcy, one of the sexiest and most beloved heroes in literature.
Yes, Colin Firth played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice AND Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’ Diary.
Destroying an idol is not easy, but Fielding’s story about Bridget Jones, who has to adjust to being a widow while raising two young children is ultimately triumphant. Bridget’s ability to crawl out of a pit of depression, lose weight, have a relationship with a boy 20 years her junior (hence the title), get over him, and fall in love again all while writing a screenplay and taking care of her children is amazing.
Furthermore, Fielding, who been the trendsetter in chick lit as we know it, writes a fairly new narrative. Instead of the “divorced chick lit” that currently dominates the shelves, Fielding examines the pervasiveness of grief one feels while one is widowed, all while keeping Bridget’s unique voice. She shows a generation of older women that they, too, can bounce back from the tragedies and disappointments of life.
And of course, Fielding is right. It is easy, after a breakup, to assume that we will never, ever, again find love. But we should ALWAYS believe that better is right around the corner.
Here are a few of my favorite women who have bounced back after breakups:
We all remember this long relationship. Something never seemed quite right about the couple…but then, in 2012 homegirl UPGRADED to this gorgeous Qatari billionaire. They got married on the hush. I’m happy for them.
Remember Ciara and Bow Wow? Look at him trying to be as tall as she is. Aww, that’s cute.
But then Bow Wow cheated…and Ciara is now with Future, a rapper whose career seems to be doing a little better than Bow Wow’s. In an interview, Future stated he saw her 7 years ago and knew they were going to be together. (Aww!). He just proposed a few days ago. Lock it down, Future!
The Knowles raised Beyonce and Solange, and were the brains behind Destiny’s Child. But when Mathew Knowles acted a fool by cheating and having an outside child, Tina Knowles played her daughter’s song, “Irreplaceable” and served him with divorce papers. Mama Knowles kept her head up, even when her ex remarried. She recently stepped out with Richard Lawson, a man who could play one of the Jacksons in a movie.
Look, he even stepped back a bit so we can see how tiny her waist is! What a gent.
My point is this: we all get heartbroken. Just don’t stay there, mired in self pity. As Bridget says, “Keep Buggering On (K.B.O.).” In American English, that means Keep it Moving. Cry, but pick yourself up and get back out there the moment you are ready to do so.
